Bakelite, the ancestor of plastics, was patented in 1909 and was used for costume jewelry, mainly in America, from the 1920s until the early 1950s. A dark resinous material, it can be easily colored in all possible shades. Highly sought-after are the pieces in particular colors, for example, this very rare flower-shaped brooch is made in the Butterscotch shade, a golden yellow with a hint of brown, produced exclusively in the 1930s. The brooch is set on a contemporary clasp.
